When illness strikes her best friend and a maniacal underground ruler wants to destroy all that is 'different', 16 year old Livi Dixon must lead -- not because of her bravery or abilities -- but out of necessity and fear.

With the hope of a cure, Livi makes a reckless gamble that just may save her friend -- but at what cost?

With her new allies (a strange and sundry group of outsiders including a handsome escaped prisoner and a kind but secretive old man), Livi sets off on a race against time, looking deep within herself in order to defeat a faceless enemy and (just maybe) manage to save her best friend in the process.

Livi's strength is tested, her character revealed, as an attempt to save one life turns into a quest to protect thousands. But is she enough to stop the shapeless evil sinking its teeth into the ones she loves? And in the end, will it even matter?

TO READ OR NOT TO READ...
Beware The Sheep is a fantasy story that is full of colorful characters and magical setting in the World of Eaux. The author paints us a detailed description of this society and complicated milieu of the Three Crowns that rule the land. If you enjoy stories about magic, richly creative themes and far-off places, this might be a book for you.

THE RUNDOWN
Livi Dixon is a 16-year-old orphan that is taken in by friends of her deceased parents. Violet, the daughter of her adoptive family and Livi's best friend, is struck with a mysterious illness and the family must set off on a long journey to the Midlands to treat her. When treatment is proven to be temporary, Livi must travel to the Kingdom of Eaux to find the plant that will cure her friend.

This task proves to be much greater than Livi anticipated. The 'Shepherd,' a faceless leader that steals souls leaving empty shells of 'Unthinkers,' is out to get something from Livi that she doesn't even realize she has.

With each trial that befalls the heroine on her journey, she learns more and more about herself and the magic she possesses. Can she complete her task and save the ones she loves?

MY TWO CENTS
At first glance, I really liked the premise to this story. There's nothing like a well-developed fantasy world and this book has that. Within the first few chapters, I felt like the author gave such good descriptions of people and places that I could see this story in my mind. The middle and end of the book, while still engaging story-wise, were harder for me to picture from the descriptions. That probably has more to do with me than the author but there you have it. I pictured a mix of fairy tale, magic and steampunk when I thought of the Kingdoms of the Three Crowns. The Midlands/Petrichor... that kind of had me thinking Forest Moon of Endor but with thicker trees... The Faux.. well that's where I got lost on the mental imagery. For some reason, I couldn't shake the semblance of a sort of Phantom Tollbooth vibe.

NO SPOILERS.
On the whole, I liked this book. The story is well-developed and the author obviously has a wonderful imagination. I kind of struggled after the half-way mark and I'm not sure why. Like I mentioned, I really liked this story so I can only guess that it might have had to do with the feeling of loose ends not being secured before the story moved on. Who knows? It didn't put to much of a damper on the experience, just a slight nagging for me.

I give the book a solid 4 stars. M. Lewis-Lerman has a new fan in me!

Beware the Sheep M LewisLerman 9780986342363 Books Reviews

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Although I'm not too sure of the cover of this book (I'm not sure it fits well with the plot of the story), I did find this book to be really entertaining to read.

I liked the elements of fantasy in this book, even though Livi was more or less a normal person to start. As a heroine, I thought she was a likable character... and even though I would have liked to see more of her training expanded upon, instead of being glossed over, it was good to see that she didn't just do everything perfectly... that she had to train and she clearly didn't have the skills straight away.

There was a lot about the world in this book that was intriguing. I didn't really like Benny's character. He was all right at first, but the way he spoke to Livi was... pretty awful.

I really did like both Hickory and Tess as characters. While I wish I could have seen some of their interactions live, instead of summarised, what I was able to see of them made them really intriguing. And it was nice to see that Tess was really tough.

I liked Violet and it was interesting to see the cause of her fever... though I did think there were some confusing aspects to it. I also liked the fact that not everything was black and white... there did seem to be shades of grey involved.

Wallace was an interesting character. I liked the way he interacted with Livi... though I did think he kept shifting personality slightly. There were some good elements of foreshadowing in this book, too, I thought.

It was good that there were some elements of mystery in this book. And it was also good that there was the opportunity to see some of the politics that were going on... even though parts of it were a bit confusing.

I'd be interested in seeing more about this world and the characters. I liked the mooncalfs and it was interesting to see something about the world itself... like the Inferno, which was especially spooky. While I didn't like Benny, I did like a lot of the other characters Livi met and interacted with.
